You all hear the phrase adopt don’t shop, and while this is a bold yet honest statement, what does the process entail? That is exactly what we are going to be discussing today. So, without further ado, let’s begin.
You will begin the adoption process by taking a look around our animal shelter and the animals we are currently caring for. Once you have found an animal you would like to adopt, whether it’s a cat, dog, rabbit, or so on, we will ask you to complete an adoption application form.
Each application form is different depending on which pet you are looking to adopt. This will help us get an idea of whether your selected animal will match your requirements.
Our animals here at Changing Lives at Carrington will have particular needs. These will all be based on the animals lifestyles, previous experiences, age, and more.
All you need to bring along with you to the adoption process is a valid form of ID and proof of address. We also advise that you consider bringing your family down to our centre to meet the animal to ensure your family and your new potential pet are comfortable and there is no stress. You and your family must all be aware of any allergies to the animal, as this is a more common issue than you think, and that is another reason why you must all visit the animal before continuing this process.
If you are currently renting a property, we require that you have written permission from your landlord that you are allowed animals to live in the home you are renting.
Next, we will take a look at the criteria above and make a decision on your next steps to becoming an adoptive ‘pawrent’.
Once this step is completed, we will then book a home visit to ensure your living arrangements are safe for the animal. We also encourage you to visit your furry friend to begin the bonding process as quickly as possible. Here at Changing Lives at Carrington, we suggest you do this while the home visit wait is in progress.
When the home visit is successfully completed, you will then be contacted to come and collect your new pet! This is the exciting part of the adoption process, as you can now begin a new chapter of your life by caring for a new member of your family.
When leaving our centre, we recommend you bring along carrier equipment, whether it’s a portable carry case or lead. This will keep your pet safe at all times during the journey to their forever home.
